I’m currently borrowing a camera from a pal and I’m loving it but I truly do not know an F-stop from and F-start. This thing is set on automatic, and I’m just firing away and hoping for the best. It does feel different than the camera on my phone- there is somehow more intention and focus with a camera.
Here’s a photo of fondue:
Is it fun? Is it even a good photo? I DON’T KNOW.
There’s a Kurt Vonnegut quote floating around about doing things and being bad at them but just doing these things for the joy, and that’s what this photography jag feels like to me. Little moments in time captured for fun. I’m not taking pictures of dignitaries or celebrities, I’m just trying to remember some good times.
I’m sure with practice and research and education, photography could become more precise, but for now, I’m having a nice time snapping some photos.
I hope you can find that little fun thing to do with your time just because it’s interesting to you.
I believe the Vonnegut quote you're thinking of comes from his letter to Xavier High School students.
He asks the students to create something, anything, and then to destroy it and scatter the bits of it.
He then drops this line,
"You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about what's inside you, and you have made your soul grow."
